My new books have arrived! It’s reading time!
Since summer is here (at last), I’ve decided a couple things. (One) I really need to find a job soon. And, (Two) I should use my free time to learn more, so why not embrace my book-loving side? This is what lead me to select a couple books on freelance writing, in addition to Jenny Lawson’s new memoir.
I originally intended to pick out a couple books on freelance work from different perspectives, but as it turns out I selected two books written by Michelle Goodman. I hope that I made the right choice! After carefully reading through reviews on Amazon and Chapters.ca, I choose The Anti 9-to-5 Guide and My So-Called Freelance Life. Without thinking to check the author’s name. Let this be a lesson!
So far I’m a couple chapters into the Anti 9 to 5 Guide, and I’ve learned a fair bit about the amount of networking that’s required to get into freelance writing, or really any career. Why didn’t they teach that stuff in University? Well, at least I’m learning about it now!
As I mentioned, I also ordered Jenny Lawson’s memoir, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. And… I’ve already finished it. Actually, I’m using it to balance my laptop on as I write this to reduce the risk of it overheating – what more can a book do for you? I do intend to share some lessons that I took away from it a future post, but for now I’ll say I’ve never laughed so much while reading a book. Jenny’s outrageous life stories were at times so vividly recounted that I couldn’t help but laugh. Out loud. She reminds the reader that everyone has their awkward, embarrassing, and sometimes traumatizing moments, but seeing as these are what shape us into the awesome people that we are there’s really no looking down on them.
What are you reading this summer?
